Learn how to set up Serum for a pitched fx riser that will act as a template and will be easily manipulable.
Jan 24, 2020 Xfer Serum & Serum FX v.128b5 WIN. The dream synthesizer did not seem to exist: a wavetable synthesizer with a truly high-quality sound, visual and creative workflow-oriented interface to make creating and altering sounds fun instead of tedious, and the ability to “go deep” when desired – to create / import / edit / morph wavetables, and manipulate these on playback in real-time.
For my first tutorial in Serum I am going to show how to set things up for a pitched FX riser. I am going to lead you to a really great sound, but the great thing about this tutorial is that this patch can act as a template. After we set things up all you need to do is cycle through the noise and oscillator presets to find new and interesting sounds. You will also only need to manipulate one LFO to change the riser’s length and slope. You can also easily switch the direction of the curve to get a down shifter!!
If you don’t any of the presets I use just find something else that sounds nice. The method is meant to be versatile.

Import audio directly from audio files - Serum has a variety of methods and options for analyzing audio for breaking it apart into individual waveforms.

Choose a nice noise sound to get started. I am using the Liquid Saw Noise from the ASL Soundlab sound bank.

Now make sure both the pitch and the level for the noise are at 12 o’clock. Right click on them both and choose Mod Source and then LFO 1. Once they are mapped click and drag up on the LFO modulation level control until the blue line goes all the way right. The modulation level control is a small circular graphic at about 10 o’clock for each mappable parameter.
Note* if the LFO level is dual directional, meaning going to the left and right of the initial setting of the parameter, you can go to the Matrix panel and easily change it to one directional.
LFO 1 Settings
Now that we have some sound let’s set up the LFO. When I am designing the sound I like to keep the LFO frequency quite short so I don’t need to wait a long time to hear the sounds, like 1 bar, but the final riser can be 4, 8, 16 bars long.
You can make the ramp look however you want. I chose a fairly dramatic curve for my final patch.

For the Wavetable I was looking for the high pitched sign-ish sound. I went withe Basic_McB from the Analog bank.
Next I modulated the pitch and level controls to LFO 1. The pitch modulation control in Serum is the CSR parameter in the top right of the OSC section. For the CRS control I put the modulation level to 100%. An for the main Level (volume / gain) I set the enitial to 0 an added the modulation level to about 2 o’clock.

OSC 2 Settings
For OSC 2 I went to the Analog bank again and chose a wavetable that was a bit more interesting. Here I went with the MATRIXY C64. https://metersite.weebly.com/free-download-serum-full-version.html.
Again I mapped the CSR (pitch modulation parameter) and the Level to LFO 1. I didn’t go quite to 100% on the CRS and went to about 2 o’clock on the Level. This time I did modulate the Wave Table Position (WT POS) from 0 to 100%. Note also that I dropped the OCT from 0 to -1. This just means I dropped it down and octave.
